SJN Day Away Corner
St. John Neumann Day Away Outdoor Gathering
Day Away – with the help of Youth Ministry and the Knights of Columbus (KofC) -- held its Annual Summer Cookout in the parish garden area on August 11tth for participants, their caregivers, and volunteers. Like our other outdoor gathering, this one was a shortened version of the program and included a craft and brain-booster games. Yet this time, there were billowing aromas of sizzling burgers and hots wafting from the barbeque grill in our midst. A special thanks to our Grill Masters (and Knights), Fred Prifty and Jim Moran. They soon realized how being at this barbeque would ease everyone into sharing their own memories of past barbeques with family and friends. Deb and Natalie Faucher, from Youth Ministry, joined our team in helping with the details of set-up, lunch prep, and transitions from one activity to the next and then to the final clean-up. Everyone working together seemed to lighten the load along with our spirits!
Weather forecasts threatened a lingering rain for the morning. A special thanks to parishioners, Julia Gasdick and Rita Wadleigh, who let us borrow their canopies for shelter if needed. We were blessed to have wonderful weather and a joyful time for all involved.
Everyone pre-screened for COVID safety and were careful to use the hand-sanitizers provided. Masks were available but not required. With the new variant directed vaccine coming, many more are easing toward a transition to indoor gatherings – possibly by the end of October 2022. We continue to prayerfully monitor the CDC Guidelines and everyone’s confidence about the safety aspects.
On all other Thursdays, we will continue to offer virtual brain booster activities
using Zoom format. We welcome family caregivers and their loved ones who are in the early to moderate stage of Alzheimer’s or related dementia.

Day Away Needs Volunteers
St. John Neumann Day Away uses an all-volunteer staff to provide a safe, loving and stimulating environment for program participants who are living with the early stages of dementia. We offer a wide variety of roles to choose, including 1:1 Participant Companion, Craft Assistant, and Lunch Assistants. The best volunteers are friendly listeners, who enjoy being with the elderly and learning about all that’s meaningful in their lives. If you wish to learn more about the volunteer roles, please contact:
